What It’s About


The Social and Human Services curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies that provide social, community, and behavioral health services. Along with core courses, students take courses that prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas. 

Coursework promotes the development of professional knowledge, skills, and values in social and human services. Opportunities for experiential learning allow students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Courses You’ll Take


Students will take courses from a variety of disciplines within the social and human services program. The emphasis in core courses is placed on the development of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the field. Key courses include:

  • Introduction to Human Services
  • Interviewing Techniques for Human Services
  • Diversity, Ethics and Trends in Human Services
  • Group Dynamics
  • Case Management
  • Counseling, Theories and Skills
  • Crisis and Intervention Principles

Practicum experience is an integral part of the curriculum, providing opportunities for the application of knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. This hands-on experience ensures that students are well-prepared for real-world challenges in the human services field.

Graduates of the comprehensive Social and Human Services program will be well-equipped for positions across a wide range of sectors, including mental health, family services, social services, rehabilitation, corrections, educational agencies, substance abuse treatment and prevention, community outreach and development, public health and wellness, nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups, aging and gerontology services, youth and adolescent programs, crisis intervention and emergency services, disability services and support, veteran and military family services, and domestic violence and shelter services. This program prepares students to effectively serve diverse populations and address various human services needs.

Additionally, graduates who wish to further their education have numerous options available, with an abundance of transfer opportunities to senior public and private institutions. The broad and versatile skill set gained through this program ensures that students are prepared for a variety of roles in the human services field, enhancing their career prospects and potential for advancement.

Format: Virtual (except for clinical)

Time to Complete: 2 Years

Start Term: Fall or Spring

Virtual courses require participation in live class sessions at a regularly scheduled time in a virtual environment (i.e., Zoom, GoogleMeet, etc.) and completion of class activities, assignments​ and assessments i​n an online platform at a time of your choosing within course deadlines.

An in-person internship is required for the A.A.S Degree pathway.

The Addiction and Recovery Certificate is often used for some of the initial educational requirements through the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB) or the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
